Photo: Raphael Castello. The Salar de Uyuni salt flat is the largest in the world. It is located in the Potosí Department and the Department of Oruro, in southwestern Bolivia, the Andean highlands, to 3.650m above sea level.
About 40,000 years ago, the area was part of Lake Michina, a giant prehistoric lake. When the lake dried up and left as the current remaining Poopó and lakes Uru Uru, and two great deserts, salted Coipasa (smallest) and extensive Uyuni. The Salar de Uyuni has approximately 12,000 square kilometers in area, or is larger than Lake Titicaca on the border between Peru and Bolivia and has approximately 8300 km ².

Nesse período, ele parece um enorme espelho que se confunde no horizonte com o céu. Assim os passeios ficam restritos a algumas áreas. Entretanto, entre abril e novembro todo o salar fica acessível, pois torna-se um imenso deserto seco com uma paisagem ainda mais exótica.
O salar é composto por aproximadamente 11 camadas com espessuras que variam entre 2 e 10 metros, sendo a mais externa de 10 metros. A profundidade total é estimada em 120 metros e é composta de uma mistura de salmoura e barro lacustre. O salar é também uma das maiores reservas de lítio do mundo, além de conter importantes quantidades de potássio, boro e magnésio.
Além do deserto de sal, ilha do Pescado e as lagoas coloridas onde se vê os flamingos, é possível, num mesmo "tour", conhecer lagoas de águas termais, sendo uma delas formada de piscinas e a outra natural. Também existem geiseres que exalam vapor a uma temperatura de 38°C, a mesma temperatura da água. Outro local interessante é um cemitério com ossadas de antigos moradores da região.
A origem do sal provavelmente está relacionada com a imensa quantidade de vulcões no entorno do Salar de Uyuni já que situa-se sobre uma região de altiplano, 3650 m acima do nível do mar. A concentração do sal é também facilitada pelo fato de ser uma região muito árida. Foto: Raphael Castello.
